What
does the term "authorization" mean in on-line credit card transactions? Credit
card information (e.g. credit card number and expiry date)
that is entered at the merchant website for on-line
purchase will be forwarded to the customer's issuing bank
(i.e. the bank that issues the credit card to this
particular customer) for authorization. Authorization
includes validation of credit card information and credit card limits. If the authorization is successful, a
positive response will be sent back to the merchant. In
turn, the customer will be shown with an accepted on-line
credit card transaction message, e.g. a receipt. At this point of time,
the on-line credit card transaction is considered as
authorized by the issuing bank and the order has been
accepted by the merchant. However, the amount of purchase
has not been transferred to the merchant's account. |
|
|
|
|
|
6. |
What
does the term "settlement" mean in on-line credit card transactions? Usually
at the end of the business day, merchants will
conclude the credit card sales by sending a settlement
request to their merchant banks. The merchant banks will
collect payments from issuing banks whose customers have
credit card transactions with these merchants.
After the settlement has been carried out, the respective
issuing banks will bill their customers for the amount
that these customers have spent at the merchant's stores or
on-line stores. |
